Sacred Spaces of Texas

Organization:
Dallas Center for Architecture
Exhibition Dates:
Jan. 16, 2014 to Mar. 13, 2014

Originally presented at the Architecture Center Houston, the exhibit includes thirty-six examples of religious architecture located throughout Texas. The buildings included range from Spanish missions to the painted churches of Central Texas. Mosques, Buddhist and Hindu temples, intimate spaces, mega spaces, traditional and non-traditional spaces are all featured. Historic, ethnic, and ritual influences have played major roles in the design of each structure, but of special interest is the manner in which many of them are expressions of varied heritages.

Buildings in North Texas that are featured include Howard Meyer’s masterpiece, Temple Emanu-El; Cunningham Architects’ award-winning Cistercian Abbey Church; the Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints by West & Humphries; and two O’Neil Ford-designed churches, First Christian Church and the Little Chapel in Woods, both located in Denton.

The show will run through March 13 at the Dallas Center for Architecture, 1909 Woodall Rodgers Freeway, Suite 100. The exhibition is free and open to the public from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Fridays
