Join the Rice Design Alliance this June 8 through June 14 as we travel south to take in the architecture of Santiago, Chile. Rice School of Architecture Professor Carlos Jiménez and noted architectural historian Stephen Fox will be our guides for a one-week journey to the country's capital and cultural, political, and financial center, as well as nearby Valparaíso and Viña del Mar.
“Chilean architects are receiving growing international attention,” says Jiménez, “gaining the respect and admiration the world over for the outstanding quality, rigor, and inventiveness of their architecture.” Adds Jiménez: “We will visit such landmarks as the National Fine Arts Museum, the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, the Plaza de La Moneda Cultural Center, recent faculty buildings and libraries designed for the Pontifical Catholic University and the Diego Portales University, progressive housing projects such as Edificio Gen, insightful mixed-use developments such as Edificio Cruz del Sur, and the memorable Mestizo Restaurant.”
The cost of the trip, excluding airfare, begins at $3,600. Participation is limited to RDA members, but membership has always been open to the public. RDA has been organizing tours since 2000, taking members to Savannah, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, and New York, among other cities. In 2005, we began traveling abroad and have seen Mexico City, Berlin, Helsinki, Paris, Buenos Aires, and Lisbon, among others. The tour is led by Fox and architecture professors as well as local guides and architects who can take you behind the scenes and into private homes, providing access to spaces you might not be able otherwise to see.
