The next AAO webinar will feature newly published research by AAO member Jason Nu, PhD, documenting the process of creating docent-led architecture tours, the emotional impact they make on pubic tourgoers, and why it’s such a powerful tool for promoting design. For his dissertation in the field of geography, Nu conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork on architecture tours using the Chicago Architecture Foundation as a case study.
As Jason studied the do’s and don’ts of effective communication and theatrical blocking that form the bedrock of a veteran tour docent’s art, he unpacked how the experience was received by the tourgoer. In helping awaken people to see architecture and city design, we also come to see why docents are such essential stewards of design culture.

Presenter bio: Jason Nu
Jason Nu is a researcher, writer, and educator in the fields of geography, architecture and urban design, and the public humanities. He recently completed a doctoral dissertation on the ways in which the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s tour program inspires enthusiasm and reverence for the city of Chicago and its architectural legacy. Jason has also written extensively on the topic of Olympics-related urban redevelopment projects in Rio de Janeiro, and on sustainability as a key urban planning principle in the city of Malmö, Sweden. Prior to his academic career, he worked as an associate producer and assistant editor on PBS documentary films, including The Supreme Court and Becoming Americans: The Chinese Experience. In addition to a PhD in Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Jason holds an MA in Geography from Hunter College, CUNY, and a BA in Film Studies from Wesleyan University. While he enjoys living in Brooklyn, he will always call Queens, where he grew up, home.
