DESIGN IN ACTION: INSPIRING SOLUTIONS FOR PEOPLE AND CITIES
ASSOCIATION OF ARCHITECTURE ORGANIZATIONS/
ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN EDUCATION NETWORK
2010 CONFERENCE

Join us for a two-day conference of inspiring ideas and practical solutions. We're convening a terrific network of industry leaders and visionary thinkers, including delegates from large and small architecture centers and allied organizations. Alongside our own, we'll hear from voices outside the field whose work is dissolving traditional boundaries of architecture and design and nonprofit practice.

Guests include:

  • Ty Goddard, Director, British Council for School Environments
As governments race to press the reset button, few can narrate the landscape better than Ty. Situating design and design thinking into the considerations of professionals in other fields lies at the core of his leadership strategies for BCSE and the aim to catalyze social change through design.
  • John Tolva, Director of Citizenship & Technology, IBM Corporation
Leader of the fascinating City Forward project, John's work continues to promote new intersections between people, technology, and cities - a place where digital tools demand and democratize process.
  • Jason Schupbach, Director of Design, National Endowment for the Arts (invited)
Place-making and design have found a formidable team at the NEA these days. This review of the NEA's current efforts will include new challenges for partnering with today's business community.
  • Ned Cramer, Editor-in-Chief, Architect Magazine
An overview of the latest national and international trends in architecture and design.
  • Bridget Sawyers, Chief Executive, Architecture Centre Network
Sawyers is one of the most talented practitioners in our field today. She's also a tireless thinker, as many of us came to learn through her landmark publication, "The Value of Architecture Centres." Bridget is ready to pose some new ideas that each of our organizations must accept.

AAO and A+DEN Breakout Sessions include:

  • From the Inside: What Schools Really Need from Your Design Education Program
  • Cultural Tourism and Audience Trends
  • Architecture Goes Social (New Ideas in New Media)
  • Design Issues Affecting Our Nation: Fit City and Beyond
  • Fundraising Outlook and Sector Analysis
  • Architecture Tours at Every Scale
  • Public Programming Today: Between Knowledge-Production and Info-tainment
  • Progressive Exhibitions

Reed Kroloff, architect and Director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, moderates a panel discussion on the work and politics of "right-sizing" struggling cities. Conversation will address a number of communities battling decline, eventually winding up at the largest project of them all: Detroit, Michigan. Multiple insights will be sought, including those of urban planner Toni Griffin, a top consultant to government officials in Detroit.

Don't miss this exclusive four-hour workshop led by a distinguished panel of AAO Board Members.
