Boosting Your Organization's Civic Reach (2014 Design Matters Conference)

Building a Diverse City-Building Constituency (2014 Design Matters Conference)

For her keynote address delivered at the 2014 Design Matters Conference in Washington, DC (November 12-15), Mary Rowe shared an insider look at the strategies and organizing principles driving The Municipal Art Society of New York and its efforts to take up a strong local leadership position in post-Sandy New York City and throughout the Tri-State region, in addition to developing an international partnership network that help sharpen the thinking of MAS staff members. For any organization wondering how it might better mobilize its constituents, this is a fine presentation stocked with clear learning points.

Designing for Disaster: Exhibition Overview (2014 Design Matters Conference)

Presented during the 2014 Design Matters Conference in Washington, DC (November 12-15), National Building Museum curator Chrysanthe Broikos shared an overview of the museum recent exhibition on climate change and disaster preparedness, "Designing for Disaster." This presentations offers highlights of the exhibition, as well as the context driving its development (i.e., learning goals, target audiences). This is a helpful resource for understanding the planning and delivery of a large-scale architecture exhibition.

Sustaining Your Hit Program (2014 Design Matters Conference)

Presented during an AAO members breakfast round table at the 2014 Design Matters Conference, Berit Hoff and Cynthia Kracauer (AIA NY / Center for Architecture) share notes on the opportunities and challenges in stewarding an unusual exhibition format carried out each year by their organization. This novel exhibition format is hosted inside a NYC subway terminal; the format may serve as inspiration to those seeking new programming ideas, while the fundraising challenges addressed in the presentation can be applied to most any public program.

AAO Exhibitions and Public Programs Pitch Session (2014 Design Matters Conference)

This compendium of 10 presentations by AAO members was delivered during the 2014 Design Matters Conference in Washington, DC (November 12-15). The group came together to share speculative ideas each had for the development of future design exhibitions and public programs; all sought the chance to gain feedback from the group, identify potential program collaborators, and generally see what new thinking was catching on with their peers. It's a great sampling of the ideas and talents at work across the AAO Network.
